‘The Bakery’ Newtown, Sydney
This award winning project situated in Newtown, Sydney involved the complete reconfiguration, restoration and redesign of two separate buildings. The small corner shop constructed in 1909 and the much larger warehouse (formerly used as a local bakery) constructed in 1922. Led by the talented PAMMENT PROJECTS team, the design and construction ensured this project delivered the fine workmanship and high attention to detail required.

Architects’ own homes are often a breeding ground for taking risks – a chance to do the things other client’s wouldn’t let slide. The Hawthorne Street House, designed by and for Sheppard and Rout director Tim Dagg, is full of these slightly surprising moments. The most obvious of these happens on the approach to the house, with its defining backlit polycarbonate cladding, but stepping inside the dwelling and circling round the back leads us to a few more.

The new home of the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music celebrates the activities of music rehearsal and practice – a green room for Melbourne's arts precinct. Outwardly focused and inviting, the building balances the singular concentration required of students with the camaraderie of engaging with others. The building is a place to rub shoulders with fellow music students, and the artistic milieu of the wider campus and precinct.

We focused our attention away from conventional solutions to investigate highly bespoke and cost effective alternatives. The Sawmill House demonstrates how Australia’s growing hoard of latent building materials can be used in new and innovative ways.

This home challenges the ideals of larger house living and proves that with good design, volume and spatial layout 80m2 of space can feel generous and comfortable to live in. The form is essentially a rectangle with carved out niches that provide sense of address, privacy and shelter.

The Northern Steamship Company, one of New Zealand’s original coastal shipping companies, opened its offices in the Quay Street building in 1899. Closing shortly after the company sold its fleet in 1974 the building languished until a refurbishment was undertaken in 2005, the first heritage building to be refurbished in the Britomart Precinct.
