VIEW PROJECT

There are many ways to create a destination hotel or resort that can provide an immersive experience for their guests. One of the ways is to build the hotel on an impressive location, whether it is in the middle of a well-known neighbourhood in a city or in a remote place with strong cultural values. Other hotels make themselves destinations by capitalising on the historical building or the historical site, while some others highlight the first-class facilities and fun activities.

With its location being in Ubud, Bali, Titik Dua Ubud Hotel has the potential to position itself as a destination hotel. What is more interesting is that this hotel’s location is adjacent to an art gallery, which the architect, andramatin, tries not to interfere. As the main land plot of the hotel is behind the gallery, the architect decided to elevate the entrance and create a 45-metre bridge that sits right above the gallery for the guests to reach the main building.

The elevated corridor, being one of the most unique features of the hotel, is flanked with brick walls and open towards the sky. While the brick walls limit the view to its surrounding, the roofless corridor gives a dynamic experience that goes with the changing weather. The full-height brick walls also create a sense of being confined into a small space before entering somewhere new, giving an intense feeling of immersion. It is only when the guests reach the main building that views to the hotel’s neighbourhood become apparent as the solid brick walls shift into some porous ones before finally being fully open on one side, offering a view of its surrounding.

As a small hotel, each of the 22 guest rooms in Titik Dua Ubud is designed to be very compact. with a size of barely three-metre-wide, the interior is very intimate without feeling cramped. Thanks to its full width and floor-to-ceiling opening, the compactness rather creates a nice framing of the small balcony outlooking the lush part of Ubud. In contrast, the top floor restaurant has an extensive floor area, exposed roof structure ceiling, with limited openings that create a warmer and more intimate dining experience.

Instead of applying the usual Balinese house or temple carving details that many other hotels utilise to create a sense of being in Bali, Titik Dua Ubud’s play of openings and use of local material allow itself to connect with its surrounding. The way andramatin captures the essence of being in a place, specifically Ubud, without mimicking the familiar Balinese architecture is indeed an interesting approach that makes Titik Dua Ubud an ideal destination hotel worth a visit.
