Every project faces its own challenges, especially in a residential project where design is more personal. The answers to these challenges become the design that shapes the uniqueness of the project. The design of IY House is resulted from the same kind of approach.

The client of IY House wants a home with an open and breathable atmosphere, while keeping a clean design that is easy to maintain and free from excessive details. The house features a double-height ceiling and mezzanine area that feels like a big, blank canvas.

Beside the large double-height ceiling and the mezzanine, there are also expansive void areas. These voids bring a risk of excessive echo and empty spatial feeling. The design of IY House answers these problems by finding the right balance in filling the space without making it too crowded and overwhelming.

At the heart of the house, the featured double-height ceiling accommodates the living and dining room. The space is emphasized by the marble-patterned TV backdrop. This element acts as a visual connector between the dining and living areas. Even though both spaces serve different functions, the continuous backdrop builds a strong sense of unity throughout the open space, making the overall area more connected and balanced.

Since the house itself has a very open spatial character, many other walls are intentionally left calm in visual. Moreover, many of these large blank walls are transformed into acoustic and padded panels to solve the issue of excessive echoes. The wall panels are carefully designed and calculated to help absorb and break sound reflections within the space.

On the other side of the TV backdrop is the large window openings. Combined with the high-ceiling, the design creates an open, breathable space with natural light and airflow, responding to the tropical environment.

The spatial arrangement requires careful consideration of thermal insulation and indoor comfort. In order to reduce heat while still optimizing natural light and ventilation, passive strategies to let natural airflow inside the house are combined with additional solutions like installing ceiling fans and solar window film. Hence, the heat gain inside the house can be minimized.

IY House also applies the modern tropical design concept with a more contemporary approach. Natural materials such as wood and marble are utilised. Through the involvement of local craftsmen and craftsmanship products during the design and construction process, the natural materials are interpreted in a lighter and more refined way.

The overall look of the house feels modern and timeless without becoming visually heavy. Instead of giving an empty or hollow impression, the careful composition of materials, proportions, and interior elements gives a sense of warmth and completeness to the space.
