Vibrant Essence of Mid-Century Design

Though this village house in Sai Kung, Hong Kong boasts a nearly 50-year history, its interior was outdated and dilapidated. Still, the couple who owns it was captivated by the natural environment and decided to make it their home. We strategically reimagined the space, incorporating the owners’ favourite colour palette and mid-century vibe, enabling the family to enjoy breathtaking views of the greenery from various angles while fostering intimate family interactions.

Originally a three-bedroom apartment, we reconfigured the layout to maximize the views. The enclosed kitchen, once positioned near the entrance, was relocated next to the balcony and transformed into an open area seamlessly connected to the living space. The male owner, a foreigner who loves cooking, benefits from the circular workflow of the open kitchen and island counter, which enhances both functionality and family engagement.

The male owner embraces bold colours and has a strong preference for mid-century style. We therefore adopted signature elements of mid-century: a vibrant, highly saturated palette and teak wood as the design theme. Arched doorways were introduced in the corridors, complemented by vintage-style lighting, evoking a sense of architectural nostalgia. Storage solutions were thoughtfully integrated into the corridor and foyer, striking a balance between aesthetics and practicality.

The bathroom and entryway are linked by vintage-patterned floor tiles, while the mid-century aesthetic continues into the bathroom with green tiles, a teak veneer basin counter, and spherical lighting, creating a cohesive and stylish design.

This transformation not only revitalizes the space but also enhances the owners’ connection to nature and to one another. By marrying modern functionality with vintage charm, we have created a home that celebrates both the past and present, promising countless cherished moments for the family in the years to come.
