This is a new bungalow for a large extended household — a couple with 3 grown-up sons, each with his own family. Amenities such as a karaoke room, a mahjong room, and a roof-top lap pool were requested for. The site was on the crest of a rising road and had unobstructed views of Bukit Gombak.
This was a house that needed space, all 5 storeys from the basement to the attic. There was a need to break up the verticality of the resultant mass. 3 blocks were made, sliding sideways to assert independence from one another.
The structural details required to achieve this led to an involved study in reinforced concrete. By upstand beams, structural walls and folded slabs, concrete was both the structural system as well as the material aesthetic. Square windows of varying sizes were fitted within the concrete walls. Moving through the house involved varied encounters with the surrounding greenery through these frames.
