Omahdesa is a residential project designed through experimental process which aims to embrace local wisdom. Omahdesa means rural dwelling because the site is located in a small village in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The main challenge in this project is reimagining the future of landed house for rural context. During rapid urbanization, people who live in village are facing exposure from the outside that enforce rural lose its identity and becomes new urban. For instance, traditional houses are rare to find today and new built environments do not represent the culture. Village supposed to be a place where local wisdoms, including architecture, are easily found and preserved.
Initial concept for this proposal is creating a vernacular house that focuses on several aspects such as form, materiality, craftsmanship, and its relation to the surrounding environment. Adopting traditional architecture form, the project has an overlapping roof that provides cross ventilation for each room. It allows heat inside the building leave freely through the gap between 2-layers roof to achieve thermal comfort.
Then, the project is mostly built from local materials such as red brick and roof tile because the resource of clay is very abundant here. Material exploration is not only dedicated to make great architecture but also bring awareness to local industries that their products can be worthier if the materials are elaborated with good design. Creating impact through architecture by elevating value and empowering community.
Furthermore, the house is crafted by skilled workers who live near the site. It is really important to make the project as collaborative space to build social relations. In addition, the building stands on very beautiful landscape under a mountain which requires proper setting to optimize its potential. Through organized configurations and spacious openings, the house brings different spatial experiences and strong relations to nature.
Omahdesa not only succeeded in representing the idea of embracing local wisdom but also managed to strengthen the identity and character of rural dwelling. This project becomes a bold statement that traditional architecture still exists and remains relevant to the times.
