Type: Beach Club
Location: Uluwatu, Bali
Status: Completed
Build area: 5000m2
Voted one of Conde Naste’s ‘Best Looking Restaurants’ in 2018, Ulu Cliffhouse sits about 30 metres above Uluwatu beach.
Before it was the Cliffhouse, this beach club started life as an unfinished villa with an empty 25 metre infinity pool. Working from what was already there, we were given the original concept from interior design studio Shed London.
We stayed as close as we could to their concept, only re-working the design aspects we had to in order to keep things right for the location.
The original buildings were transformed into the arrival area and retail spaces. We built open-air timber extensions on the right and left sides of the site for the bars and restaurant. At the very front, over-hanging the cliff edge, two terrace spaces were added with daybeds and banquette seating.
But the cherry on top at Ulu is a secret little location right on the cliff boulders down below, which is also part of the site. For this spot we designed the Bar on the Rocks. It was built on a set of reclaimed timber platforms shaded by climbing plants and Katapang trees. It has the best seats in the house for surf watching and sunset.
All of the furniture, fittings and fabrics at Ulu were procured by us locally.
