As part of its long-term commitment to operational efficiency and environmental responsibility, Phelps Dodge Philippines (PDP) continues to strengthen its clean energy initiatives through a combination of on-site renewable generation and a strategic shift to fully renewable electricity sourcing.
Solar Rooftop Project: Delivering Immediate Impact
In 2023, PDP completed the installation of a solar rooftop system at its manufacturing facility as a capital investment in clean energy.
The project consists of 2,728 solar panels with a total rated capacity of 1.5 MWp (1,500 kWp). On average, the system generates 135,662 kWh per month, supplying approximately 10% of PDP’s average monthly electricity consumption of 1.3 GWh.
The solar rooftop system delivers estimated electricity cost savings of ₱6.5 million per year, helping mitigate exposure to energy price volatility while improving cost predictability.
Environmentally, the project significantly reduces PDP’s carbon footprint by curtailing approximately 1,458 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually, equivalent to 36,448 metric tons over the system’s 25-year lifespan.
Transition to 100% Renewable Electricity by 2026
Building on the gains from on-site solar generation, PDP is preparing for a major milestone in its sustainability journey: the transition of its manufacturing plant to 100% renewable electricity supply starting in 2026.
Following a competitive evaluation of power suppliers based on cost efficiency and environmental contribution, PDP has identified a renewable energy provider offering:
• Competitive fixed electricity rates
• A portfolio fully sourced from renewable energy
This transition ensures that the remaining 90% of PDP’s electricity demand, not covered by solar generation, will be sourced from clean energy—effectively eliminating coal-based electricity from plant operations.
Advancing PDP’s Environmental Commitments
Together, the solar rooftop project and the shift to renewable electricity sourcing represent a decisive move toward lower-carbon manufacturing, cost resilience, and long-term sustainability. These initiatives support PDP’s broader ESG goals by reducing greenhouse gas emissions, stabilizing operating costs, and reinforcing the company’s role as a responsible industrial partner.
By 2026, PDP’s manufacturing operations will be powered entirely by renewable energy—demonstrating that environmental stewardship and operational excellence can move forward together.
