The project was inspired by the Biblical accounts of the Resurrection of the Christ, recreating in contemporay form, the cave where Jesus had risen on Easter morning.
The HB Memorial's design is based on basic geometries that convey meaning. THe square represents serenity, the triangle honors the Holy Trinity, and the circle symbolizes eternity. Peace, with God, forever!
The site measures 4m by 5m and the corners point to the Cardinal Directions. A 500mm setback is required at the front and 300mm at the sides, leaving a 3.4 x 4.5 building footprint. A square base - representing serenity - of 3.4m by 3.4m is extruded to the maximum height of 5m. To take advantage of being on a corner lot, the box is cut diagonally to create a triangular plane facing skyward, to honor the Holy Trinity.
Another diagonal cut at the bottom creates an opening, suggesting the cave where Jesus was buried. To maximize the lot, a dark grey box extends to the rear, keeping the white box as the focus of the massing. The tomb shall be in white marble, floating in the middle of dark grey granite interior. A circular oculus at the roof, symbolizing eternity, lets light and rain from the heavens shower over a flower bed on top of the tomb raising new life, recalling that "He is not here; He has risen!"
White marble shall clad the exterior walls with the veins perpendicular to the entrance as if Light shines from within. Rendering: K. Rasmussen.
The mausolem is at the fron and center when viewed from the lawn dedicated to underground burials. Its height and form stands out from its neighbors and the dark interiors create a triangle that seems to point towards the heavens.
The perfect corner lot, unlike any other plot in the memorial park means views to and from the HB Memorial will never be obstructed which called for an iconic form.
Approaching from the left side, the triangular volume may seem to stand unsupported, defying gravity.
The mausoleum faces east and has its entrance at the corner of the two pathways making both facades the front of the structure.
The clear lawn gives the sculptural mausoleum a proper foreground. The mausoleum's unique form and bright white finish gives it a dignified presence.
Architect I.M. Pei once said abut his glass pyramid at the Louvre, "the simpler the solution, the more powerful it is." This is our attempt at a simple solution: a pyramid on its side.
INTERIOR: The large wooden cross is illuminated by the oculus. Park caretakers report sparkling light from the interiors at sunrise. At certain times of the day, sunlight touches the wooden cross. Reflections of the oculus are also cast on the curved granite wall like the phases of the moon.
The owners asked the architects if they wanted to have their name on the structure. We happily obliged. Written in stone. As Steve Jobs once said, "real artists sign their work."
The owner's family names are etched on Romblon marble through the use of computers. The white romblon marble creates a stark contrast with the clear blue sky.
