The aluminium industry is changing. As sustainability and transparency become non-negotiable, businesses are looking for ways to ensure the materials they use are responsibly sourced. The Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) Chain of Custody (CoC) certification plays a key role in this shift, providing a framework that allows certified aluminium to be traced from mining through to the final extruded product.
For manufacturers, fabricators, architects and builders, ASI CoC certification offers confidence that the aluminium they choose meets stringent environmental, social, and governance (ESG) standards. It ensures that sustainable practices are upheld at every stage of production, from ethical raw material extraction to energy-efficient smelting and responsible supply chain management. As Australian businesses seek lower-carbon solutions, the demand for ASI-certified aluminium continues to grow.
Within Australia, Capral Aluminium has been at the forefront of this transition, steadily increasing its ASI CoC-certified supply. In February, Capral received the first-ever ASI CoC-certified aluminium shipment from Vedanta Aluminium—marking a global first for Vedanta and reinforcing Capral’s commitment to responsible sourcing.
As one of the world’s leading aluminium producers, Vedanta achieved ASI CoC certification in May 2024, following two years of active engagement to align its sustainability initiatives with ASI’s rigorous standards. This reflects the growing global shift toward more sustainable manufacturing practices. The company was the first in India to receive this certification.
“As an Australian manufacturer, we have a responsibility to ensure that the materials we source support a sustainable future,” says Luke Hawkins, Capral’s General Manager of Industrial and Supply Chain. “Vedanta has shown real dedication to meeting ASI standards, and we’re proud to incorporate their certified material into our supply chain.”
Alok Ranjan, CMO, Vedanta Aluminium, said, “At Vedanta Aluminium, sustainability is woven into every aspect of our operations and the ASI CoC reflects this vision. Our partnership with Capral Aluminium is in line with our vision to empower industries with high-quality, sustainably sourced aluminium that meets the most rigorous ESG standards. Vedanta is also the first Indian company to launch low-carbon aluminium – Restora and Restora Ultra.”
Vedanta has been supplying Capral for many years, and its recent ASI CoC certification strengthens an already well-established partnership. Capral now sources from four ASI CoC-certified smelters, with expectations that approximately 40% of its aluminium supply in 2025 will be ASI CoC-certified.
Beyond ASI certification, Capral has also trialled and used Vedanta’s Restora product—a lower-carbon aluminium designed to reduce the environmental impact of aluminium production. By incorporating Restora into its sourcing strategy, Capral is enabling Australian manufacturers to access high-quality, low-carbon materials that align with ESG priorities.
“For us, ASI certification isn’t just a box to tick—it’s about shaping the future of sustainable aluminium in Australia,” Hawkins adds. “By strengthening our ASI-certified supply network and working with partners like Vedanta, we’re supporting our customers in making responsible choices that benefit the entire industry.”
This initiative reflects a broader shift in aluminium sourcing, where responsible production, supply chain transparency, and lower-carbon options are becoming the standard. As more companies prioritise working with certified suppliers, partnerships like the one between Capral and Vedanta set a benchmark for sustainable procurement, demonstrating the impact of strong ESG commitments on the future of Australian manufacturing.
