Organised by The Hong Kong Institute of Construction Managers (HKICM), the “Construction Management Awards 2022” (CMA) is now open for nomination. Since its inauguration in 2015, the biennial Awards has received high regard from the industry and has attracted top-quality submissions from contesting parties.

In its fourth edition this year, the award fulfils its purpose as a credible platform for industry professionals to share and exchange insights. It also recognises the contribution of professionals from the wider industry such as construction managers, site managers and engineers, thereby driving the development of professionalism in the industry.

Awards categorised by total contract value to weigh in inclusivity and fairness

Based on the total contract value of construction projects, two categories are introduced to the Construction Management Awards this year, namely Large Scale Project and Medium Scale Project. Such categorisation encourages the participation of more outstanding projects and allows for fair judgment. It also highlights the divergence in expertise and management skills necessary for managing projects of various sizes. Referring to the scale of most projects in Hong Kong, the Organising Committee has drawn the line at a total contract value of one billion Hong Kong dollars and laid down judging criteria that correspond to the construction requirements of large and medium scale projects.

More stringent judging criteria for “Environmental Health and Safety Officer Award”

Given increased concerns from the public over the safety and management practice of the construction industry in recent years, the Awards this year has raised the bar of the individual award “Environmental Health and Safety Officer Award” by introducing judging criteria that stress creating a worker-friendly environment. These include requiring nominees to disclose accidents that happened in a project site and/or prosecution due to non-compliance on-site.

Golden time awaits the construction industry

Professional standards for construction management are necessary to drive urban development. Cr Conrad Fung Kwok Keung, President of Hong Kong Institute of Construction Managers, mentions, “Hong Kong will kick off a pipeline of engineering projects down the road, ushering in a golden time for the construction industry. Through the Construction Management Awards, HKICM showcases and acknowledges outstanding teams and their contribution while at the same time raising the profile of the construction management profession. Apart from this, we believe that a set of professional construction management standards is necessary for lifting the quality of infrastructure projects, attracting talents to the construction industry and driving the development of Hong Kong in the long run.”
