VIEW PROJECT

Sustainability has been a constant concern when it comes to built environment. Many sustainable design approaches and strategies have been implemented as architects strive to build a comfortable, healthy environment while facing pressing issues regarding nature and energy. Among them, the concept of adaptive reuse is known as a powerful strategy in sustainable architecture practices.

As its name suggests, adaptive reuse is a design strategy of reusing old buildings and adapting them into new purposes. This act will obviously consume less energy than demolishing and replacing old construction with new structures. Such application can be seen in the adaptive reuse project of Tanaa Coffee in Purwakarta.

Tanaa Coffee transforms an existing residential house into a coffee shop. The design preserves most of the original structure while introducing minimal modifications to accommodate its new function. This approach maintains the character of the former house while creating a more efficient and sustainable renovation.

Situated inside a small valley, Tanaa Coffee offers a semi-hidden experience. The spatial design introduces a sequence that gradually guides visitors through the cafe. Visitors first pass through the narrow access before arriving at a relatively large open courtyard where the building becomes the focal point. The series of outdoor seating areas, semi-covered transitional spaces, and indoor areas form a layered spatial journey that encourages exploration.

The architectural design emphasizes openness, natural lighting, and strong visual relationship between indoor and outdoor spaces. Several walls are opened and replaced with large glass panels to allow daylight to penetrate deeper into the interior. This transparency enhances the visual interaction between cafe activities indoors and the surrounding outdoor areas, enriching the spatial experience for visitors.

Natural sunlight and green open spaces play an important role in the environmental design strategy. The layout and openings are designed to maximize daylight, reducing reliance on artificial lighting. Meanwhile, landscaped green areas and preserved existing trees improve the natural air circulation on site, allowing fresh air to flow through the cafe. This implementation helps reduce the overall energy consumption and maintain thermal comfort simultaneously.

The landscape becomes an integral part of the spatial experience. Vegetation is placed in several to enhance the site's atmosphere. The greenery softens the built environment and shades the outdoor seating spaces, complementing the indoor cafe ambience.

Through adaptive reuse strategy, Tanaa Coffee transforms a former residence into a welcoming social space. The combination of natural lighting, green spaces, and carefully arranged spatial sequences brings architecture, landscape and everyday urban life together in Tanaa Coffee.
