Tremco CPG Sporting Success at Kai Tak Sports Park: Flowcrete Flooring and Tremco Waterproofing systems

Located in Kowloon, Hong Kong, Kai Tak Sports Park (KTSP) stands as a landmark development in the heart of Hong Kong, representing the city’s largest and most ambitious sports infrastructure project to date. Designed as a world-class sports and entertainment complex, KTSP symbolizes Hong Kong’s commitment to sports, wellness, and community. A key element is the durable, safe, and hygienic flooring and waterproofing, with Flowcrete’s Flowcoat SF41, Flowfresh RT and Tremco TREMDrain meeting the park’s standards.
KTSP, a 28-hectare complex on the former Kai Tak Airport site, features a 50,000-seat stadium, indoor sports centre, public sports ground, and retail spaces. Set for 2025 completion, it’s designed as a global hub requiring durable, hygienic, and attractive flooring.
Flowcrete’s Flowcoat SF41 and Flowfresh were applied to meet the project’s demands. Approximately 80,000 m² of flooring coated with Flowcoat SF41 covers car parks and loading/unloading zones, arena floor, corridors & BOH. Flooring coated with Flowfresh RT and Flowfresh Cove in around 1,000m², for kitchen areas
Flowcoat SF41: Heavy-Duty Epoxy for High-Traffic Zones
Flowcoat SF41 is a solvent-free epoxy coating designed for high durability, chemical resistance, and visual appeal.
Key Advantages of Flowcoat SF41
- Heavy-Duty Performance: Flowcoat SF41 resists mechanical wear and impact, ideal for car parks, loading bays, and busy back-of-house areas.
- Chemical Resistance: The system withstands exposure to oils, fuels, and cleaning agents.
- Seamless Finish: The smooth, joint-free surface minimizes dirt accumulation and simplifies cleaning.
- Slip Resistance: Optional anti-slip aggregates can improve safety on wet or sloped surfaces.
- Aesthetic Versatility: A wide range of colors to match design requirements and zoning needs.
Application Areas at KTSP
- Car Parks: The parking areas needed flooring that could handle traffic, spills, and weather. Flowcoat SF41 offered a durable, low-maintenance solution.
- Loading/Unloading Zones: These high-impact areas benefit from the system’s abrasion resistance.
- Arena Floor (Under Timber): Beneath the timber sports flooring, Flowcoat SF41 acts as a protective layer, ensuring long-term structural integrity.
Corridors & BOH: In these utility-heavy zones, the epoxy system ensures durability and hygiene.
- Stairs: The anti-slip properties of Flowcoat SF41 enhance safety in stairwells and vertical circulation areas.
Flowfresh RT & Flowfresh Cove: Hygienic Flooring for Kitchen Areas
Hygiene is crucial in KTSP’s kitchens, so Flowfresh RT and Cove were chosen for their antimicrobial, seamless, and easy-to-clean surfaces.
Key Advantages of Flowfresh RT and Flowfresh Cove
- Antimicrobial Protection: Incorporates Polygiene®—a silver-ion based additive that inhibits bacterial growth for the lifetime of the floor.
- Thermal Shock Resistance: Resists hot water washdowns and temperature changes in commercial kitchens.
- Chemical Resistance: Resists food acids, oils, and cleaning chemicals.
- Slip Resistance: Textured finish reduces the risk of slips in wet environments.
- Durability: Withstands heavy foot traffic, wheeled carts, and dropped utensils.
- Seamless Wall-to-Floor Transition: Flowfresh Cove prevents dirt and bacteria buildup in corners.
- Enhanced Cleanability: Facilitates thorough cleaning and sanitation.
Tremco TremDrain 10/8G & TREMproof 250GC: Kai Tak Arean Green Roof
The Kai Tak Sports Arena’s green roof required a robust waterproofing solution capable of withstanding constant moisture, root intrusion, and structural movement.
Key Advantages
TREMproof 250GC, a high-solids, rapid-curing polyurethane membrane, was selected for its ability to be applied directly to damp or green concrete—ideal for fast-paced construction schedules. Its elastomeric nature allows it to flex with the building, bridging cracks and maintaining a seamless barrier against water ingress. This is especially critical beneath a vegetated roof, where trapped moisture and root systems can compromise traditional waterproofing layers.
Above the membrane, TremDrain was installed to serve dual functions: drainage and protection. Its multi-layered structure—typically composed of a polystyrene core and nonwoven polypropylene fabric—facilitates efficient water evacuation from the soil layer, preventing hydrostatic pressure buildup and reducing the risk of leaks. It also acts as a protective course, shielding the TREMproof membrane from mechanical damage during backfilling and landscaping.
Together, TremDrain and TREMproof form a comprehensive system that not only ensures long-term waterproofing integrity but also supports the arena’s sustainability goals. By replacing traditional pipe-and-stone drainage systems, TremDrain reduces material usage and simplifies installation. This integrated solution enhances durability, accelerates construction timelines, and meets both the structural and environmental demands of roof construction.
Sustainability & Safety
Our systems contribute to sustainable building practices:
