VIEW PROJECT

The long, diverse history of civilization and its architecture has generated an abundant source of inspiration for contemporary home design. One of the frequently-used design ideas is adapting the elements of traditional house into present-day dwellings. The implementation results in a distinctive home that fulfills both functions and aesthetics.

Japanese architecture deeply values simple living. Japanese traditional houses have many unique and useful elements with great potentials to be adapted to modern homes. Inspired by the gentle beauty of nature, the design aims to create a home that blends seamlessly with its surroundings. In this project, IMA House is a Japanese-inspired home designed in harmony with its surrounding environment by embracing tatami culture and play of natural light.

The name "IMA House" is derived from the Japanese term for a multi-functional traditional living space where family can gather for various daily activities. The house has a large rectangular footprint tom maximize internal space and an open floor plan that allows flexible interior use.

The space has dynamic boundaries, often divided only by sliding doors known as fusuma and shoji. Fusuma is an opaque partition giving a complete privacy, while shoji often acts as a window that lets soft sunlight into the house. The design strives to provide spaces that allow residents to feel grounded and connected with the surrounding neighborhood harmoniously.

The key feature of the house lies in its sunken living room. It is embodied from tatami culture, a traditional Japanese mat used to cover floors. The space symbolizes a sanctuary where one can escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

The sunken living room is surrounded by shoji windows filtering natural light. The space exudes serenity, inviting inhabitants to relax and connect with the earth below.
