With the February 2011 earthquake, the Court Theatre lost their home of 36 years but within two months an old grain storage shed beside the railway line in Addington was found. The brief was to design a 400 seat theatre and all of the back of house facilities and departments for a budget of $4.6m and to open within eighteen weeks.
As an expression of recovery this project is touched lightly by architecture being seen to be done. The utilization of readily available materials and components have allowed the Court Theatre and its patrons to come together to celebrate the survival of this iconic cultural institution. The sold out seasons since its re-opening give evidence of its success and importance to Christchurch.
