This was a two-year design and documentation project, followed by construction of a PET-CT (positron emission tomography - computed tomography) scanning facility in 2010.
The facility is only the second of its kind in New Zealand and the first in Auckland. PET-CT is a relatively new medical scanning technique used for cancer imaging in diagnosis, monitoring and treatment correction. As it involves injecting radioactive isotopes into the body, the extensive radiation shielding required was one of the most complex aspects of the facility planning and design.
The clinic is located in the Cecilia Maher Building within the Mercy Hospital site in Epsom, and was formally opened by Health Minister Tony Ryall, in October 2010.
