
A Brutalist Transformation: SPARK Architects' Vibrant Renovation in Singapore
SPARK Architects transformed a 132 sqm, 3-bedroom apartment in a Brutalist tower in Singapore into an open, vibrant space reflecting the owner’s love for art and design. The new layout features flowing, light-filled areas with bold colors and flexible, multi-functional furniture. Large windows highlight panoramic views, while art and high-quality finishes add character and sophistication, showcasing modern elegance.

MSD-HOUSE, Singapore
An homage to traditional shophouses, MSD-House is home to a family of five spanning three generations and their helper. Located in a leafy suburb close to the city centre, this three-storey inter-terrace house is replete with architectural features typical of peranakan homes of yore, including a charming pintu pagar gracing the centralised main doorway. This enables cross ventilation while maintaining privacy for the occupants within, reducing the need for air-conditioning on cooler days.

Normally, within an apartment unit or a house, there should be at least an enclosed room with a door separated from the rest of the unit’s interior. In a project named after the sole owner, Alex, Spacedge Designs challenges the need of a door, even the need of a separated room in the first place. “In a space for one, there is technically no need for doors within the flat,” says William Chan of Spacedge Designs.

In Singapore, it is not unusual to see rows of heritage shophouses transformed into boutique hotels, be it for backpackers or luxury travellers. Most of these hotels, however, were renovated with the approach to restore or uplift the shophouses’ original exterior as well as the interior, resulting in the ubiquitous, predictable impression when staying at one of these properties.
