APT Asia Pacific, in partnership with Mornington Peninsula Shire, has delivered an Australian-first redevelopment at Capel Sound Netball Club featuring Laykold® court surfaces manufactured using recycled household paint through APT’s exclusive collaboration with Paintback.
The project marks the first sports courts in Australia to incorporate recycled-paint technology, demonstrating how circular-economy innovation can be applied to community sports infrastructure without compromising performance.

Sustainable sports surfaces using recycled paint
Paintback operates Australia’s national paint stewardship scheme, collecting unwanted paint and packaging to prevent it from ending up in landfill.
Through extensive research and development, APT Asia Pacific has developed a process that allows recovered paint to be incorporated into Australian-manufactured Laykold hard court systems and the latex backing used in artificial turf products.
At Capel Sound, the court system includes approximately 22% recycled and renewable materials, diverting the equivalent of around 288 one-litre paint tins from landfill.

Upgrading a key community sports hub
Capel Sound Netball Club is an important sporting hub on the Mornington Peninsula, supporting several local clubs and hosting hundreds of players each weekend.
The redevelopment involved resurfacing six outdoor courts to improve safety, durability and long-term performance. The project was designed by head contractor iDwala, with the Laykold surface installed by Grand Slam Surfaces.

Performance and durability remain the priority
While the project introduces a sustainability innovation, the primary objective remained delivering a high-performance surface suitable for heavy community use.
The upgraded Laykold courts provide a consistent, slip-resistant and crack-resistant playing surface. Testing conducted during evaluation showed the recycled-paint system delivered around three times greater tensile strength compared with alternative systems originally considered for the project.

Supporting participation and community sport
With 400–600 players using the facility most weekends, the upgraded courts provide a safer and more reliable playing surface for the Capel Sound Netball Club and the wider community.
The redevelopment demonstrates how councils, designers, contractors and manufacturers can work together to deliver durable community sports facilities while incorporating innovative sustainability initiatives.
