Set within a multi-million-dollar new build in Sydney’s Eastern suburbs, this residential tennis court presented a significant design and construction challenge. In addition to delivering the performance and premium finish expected of a high-end residential court, the entire system needed to be fully permeable to satisfy strict landscape planning requirements.
This requirement influenced every aspect of the court’s construction. Unlike a conventional hard-court base, water needed to pass freely through the playing surface and every supporting layer beneath it. The design of the base, selection of materials and construction methodology were therefore critical to achieving the required permeability while maintaining stability, precise court levels and long-term performance.
Sportszone Group exclusively developed a purpose-designed, free-draining base incorporating a porous elastic layer to provide a stable foundation while allowing water to move through the complete court profile. Careful grading, compaction and stabilisation were required throughout construction to maintain both structural integrity and permeability.
For the playing surface, Supergrasse ProBounce COOLplus, manufactured in Melbourne by APT Asia Pacific, was selected. Designed to replicate the playing characteristics of natural grass, the system combines advanced monofilament yarn technology with COOLplus™ technology to help reduce surface heat build-up.
Set against sweeping views across Sydney’s eastern suburbs and harbour, the completed court demonstrates how specialist design, construction and premium surface selection can successfully respond to complex site and planning requirements.
The result is a fully permeable tennis court where what sits beneath the surface is just as important as the surface itself, delivering effective drainage without compromising stability, playing performance or integration with the surrounding landscape.
