A FIRST-OF-ITS-KIND AUSTRALIAN COURT RESURFACING PROJECT USING RECYCLED PAINT
TRUEMANS ROAD RESERVE SETS A NATIONAL BENCHMARK FOR SUSTAINABLE COMMUNITY SPORT INFRASTRUCTURE.
Through this first-of-its-kind Australian netball court redevelopment, iDwala transformed six high-use community courts, demonstrating how environmental innovation can be embedded into asset renewal without compromising performance, safety or playability.
WHY THIS PROJECT MATTERS
This project closes a genuine gap between sustainability ambition and practical delivery — proving greener court renewal can be delivered credibly, at scale and without compromising performance.

THE OPPORTUNITY
Australia-wide, there is a growing demand for more sustainable renewal solutions within community sport infrastructure, but adoption can stall when asset owners are unsure how greener alternatives will affect cost, performance or long-term reliability.
At Truemans Road Reserve, iDwala turned that challenge into an innovative Australianfirst delivery outcome — proving that greener court resurfacing can be practical, credible, scalable and suited to facilities ranging from community use through to elite competition.
More than a successful redevelopment, this project helps close a genuine gap between sustainability ambition and practical delivery, giving councils, schools, architects and facility owners greater confidence to pursue greener court renewals in future projects.
PROJECT SNAPSHOT
Project: Truemans Road Reserve Netball Courts
Client: Mornington Peninsula Shire
Location: Capel Sound, VIC
Timing: February 2026
Surface: Australian-made Laykold Advantage
Surface Installer: Grand Slam Surfaces
Innovation Partners: APT Asia Pacific + Paintback

THE APPROACH
iDwala delivered a Laykold acrylic system over the existing asphalt courts, using Paintback within the resurfacer/ filler coats beneath the final acrylic surface. This delivered a measurable sustainability outcome by improving surface consistency and strengthening the supporting layers of the system, while maintaining colour consistency, finish quality and playing performance of the completed courts.
DELIVERY LEADERSHIP
iDwala played a central role in translating innovation into a credible project outcome. Through strong construction and technical knowledge, and close coordination with both the manufacturer and surface installer, iDwala oversaw surface preparation, Paintback application and project sequencing to ensure the sustainability objective was delivered without compromising quality, performance or compliance. This leadership gave Council confidence that an Australian-first approach could be delivered successfully in a practical, high-use community setting.

PERFORMANCE ASSURED
Community sport facilities need to perform first and foremost, and this project showed that sustainability and performance do not have to sit in opposition. The resurfaced courts met Netball Australia requirements and certification expectations, with independent slip-resistance testing confirming results above the 75 BPN average benchmark. The strength and consistency of those results reflected the quality of the resurfacing outcome, giving Council and users confidence that the finished courts delivered the safety, playability and consistency expected of a high-use netball facility.
SUSTAINABILITY IMPACT
The Truemans Road Reserve redevelopment delivered more than a renewed playing surface — it created a measurable sustainability outcome within a real community sport setting. Each standard Laykold Paintback-enabled court contains up to 22% recycled paint and saves the equivalent of 124 x 1L cans from landfill. Across the Truemans Road Reserve project, approximately 745 litres of paint was redirected away from landfill, demonstrating how greener court renewal can deliver practical environmental value at scale.
"The completed courts demonstratethat sustainability initiatives can beincorporated intosports infrastructure renewal while maintaining the performance and durability standards required for community assets." - Mornington Peninsula Shire

PROJECT BENEFITS
LOOKING AHEAD
Truemans Road Reserve stands as a successful case study for greener, more sustainable court renewal. It shows that environmental responsibility and dependable asset renewal do not have to sit in opposition, and that environmental benefit can be delivered without asking end users to accept lesser-performing surfaces. More than a one-off innovation, it provides a practical and transferable model that gives councils, schools, architects and asset managers greater confidence to pursue sustainable court renewals in future.
