Project Summary
Swan Active Midland is a major community aquatic and recreation facility operated by the City of Swan. Following a $30 million refurbishment, the centre was transformed into a contemporary wellness and recreation destination designed to support active lifestyles for people of all ages and abilities.
Designed by Carabiner, the redevelopment focused on improving accessibility, inclusivity, sustainability, and long-term operational efficiency while modernising the facility’s aquatic, sports, fitness, and changeroom amenities.
The Facility
Swan Active Midland is designed as a “one-stop” community health and recreation hub, combining gym, aquatic, sport, and family services in one place:

The Client Brief
The refurbishment transformed the 30-year-old facility into a modern recreation hub with upgraded aquatic, sports, wellness, and community spaces.
Key facility upgrades included:
Sustainability was also a key focus of the redevelopment, incorporating passive solar design, enhanced thermal insulation, maximised natural light and ventilation, and low-energy systems to improve operational efficiency and reduce the facility’s environmental footprint.

As a high-traffic public aquatic and recreation centre, the project required washroom and changeroom solutions capable of withstanding:
The refurbishment also needed to support upgraded aquatic and sports facilities while providing low-maintenance, vandal-resistant amenity solutions suitable for long-term community use.
Project Outcome
Aqualoo supplied and manufactured high-performance compact laminate partitioning systems for the upgraded changerooms and amenities throughout the redevelopment.

The completed redevelopment has delivered a contemporary, inclusive, and community-focused recreation destination for Perth’s eastern corridor.

Reopened in May 2024, Swan Active Midland now provides upgraded facilities supporting swimming, fitness, wellness, indoor sports, and community recreation programs for the growing City of Swan community.
