5 Plants That Will Flourish In Your Bathroom

05 Jul 2022 by Caroma

Bringing greenery into your bathroom is a great way to soften harsh lines, add interest and even purify the air. Spending time in nature has been proven to relieve tension and reduce stress levels and the same goes for indoor plants, so no better way to start or end the day than with a relaxing shower or bath surrounded by nature. Not all house plants are suited to warm steamy bathroom conditions, but there are some that will absolutely flourish in these environments.

Here are five of our favourites for your bathroom:

1. Spider Plant (Chlorophytum comosum)

Green thumbs are not a requirement for growing Spider Plants. These wee gems are easy to care for and don’t need a lot of attention, so are great for even the most novice or inattentive gardener. They are perfect for bathrooms because they don’t mind being pot-bound, and fine without much light and enjoy moisture. Place your pot on a benchtop, hang it over the bath or sit it on a shelf to add some greenery to your bathroom.

2. Birds Nest Fern (Asplenium nidus)

These are a popular bathroom plant as they thrive in warm, humid environments. Birds Nest Ferns change their appearance depending on the amount of light you give them. If you have a light-filled bathroom, the leaves will be more crinkled. Less light and your leaves will be flatter. We love the look of this rich green, glossy plant on a benchtop or shelf to add a touch of nature to any bathroom.

3. Aloe Vera

Aloe Vera looks great in a pot on the floor, hanging or even on a shelf. It’s great in both high or low light areas and is good at absorbing moisture. However, this plant doesn’t like being over-watered, so a deep water soak once a week is plenty to keep it thriving.

Fun fact: Aloe Vera is known by some as the ‘First Aid plant’ as can be used on topical wounds, minor burns and sunburn.

4. Pothos (Epipremnum aureum)

Otherwise, known as Devil’s Ivy, this plant has distinctive heart-shaped leaves. Best grown in hanging pots to let it fall beautifully over the sides, pothos likes moderate to low, indirect light and is very fast growing.

5. Zanzibar

One of the hardiest, low maintenance plants you’ll find! So much so that its glossy lime green leaves only need watering about 4 times per year. It doesn’t need direct light either, so it can be placed away from the window, or in a pot stand to brighten up a dark corner of the bathroom.

Top tip: Dried foliage looks fabulous in a vase too! Eucalyptus is a great plant to dry. Tie a bunch together with string and hang them from the ceiling in a dark dry room. After 2 weeks they should be fully dry and ready to pop in a vase to enjoy.
