7 Questions To Ask Yourself Before Starting Your Bathroom Renovation

05 Jul 2022 by Caroma

We think that planning makes perfection… and the more you plan your bathroom renovation before you start, the smoother the process is likely to be. Here are some questions to ask yourself before you start out on your bathroom renovation journey:

1. What does your dream bathroom look like?

There are so many choices to make and we suggest that a good way to start is by getting clear about what you want your bathroom to look like. Making a moodboard is a great way to gather all your design inspiration into one place which makes it easy to share with your bathroom designer and trades.

2. What are the most important features to you?

Have a think about any features that would make using your bathroom a more enjoyable experience for you. Perhaps you want a seat in the shower to relax while you wash? Or underfloor heating so that you’ll never freeze your feet on a tiled floor again? Maybe double basins so that the kids won’t be lining up to brush their teeth each morning! Write a list of things that you’d really like to include.

3. Do I need a bath or just a shower?

This is a very common question we get asked in our showrooms and we often ask the question back to the customer! Gone are the days when the bath is an absolute must in a home. These days, sometimes a large shower is more desirable than a small bath/shower combo. Think about the objective of this bathroom renovation - are you remodelling this bathroom just for you and your family, or for resale? If your family can live without out a bath, leave it out. If you’re reselling a family home, perhaps it’s worth trying to incorporate into the design.

4. What should I look for in new bathroom fittings and fixtures?

There are constant improvements in bathroom products, and new technology such as our Cleanflush toilets, so it’s always a good idea to research before you buy. With so many colours and designs to choose from, the best way to select products for your bathroom is to view them in person to determine which products best meet your needs.

At our Caroma Showrooms you can view all the latest bathroom technology, see the products in-situ in our bathroom displays and speak to our experts for product and design advice.

5. How can I achieve adequate ventilation?

Bathrooms are a wet space and ventilation is a really important factor for keeping your room dry and mould-free. Don’t fall into the trap of neglecting to think about how to add good ventilation to your bathroom plans. A skylight or window that opens to let in fresh air is favoured to mechanical ventilation alone.

6. How can I create enough storage?

Since bathrooms are often the smallest room in the house, storage space is often hard to come by. When you’re renovating a bathroom from scratch you’ll have the opportunity to add storage cupboards, wall niches and shelves that are sometimes hard to retrofit, so don’t forget to incorporate this into your bathroom design from the start.

7. What am I likely to find beneath the existing floor and walls?

Last but definitely not least, are you ready for what you might find at demolition stage? If you’re renovating an old bathroom, be prepared for what may lie beneath the old tiles and walls and ensure you have enough contingency in your budget to cover any unforeseen costs. Being wet rooms, bathrooms are notorious for having rotting floors or leaky plumbing that will need to be fixed before you can start rebuilding.
