As we have just celebrated World Green Roof Day, we thought it was only fitting to revisit one of Australia’s most ambitious green infrastructure projects - the Victorian Desalination Plant Roof Gardens.
We delivered this 27,000m² extensive green roof, which remains the largest in the Southern Hemisphere and continues to set the benchmark for integrating landscape and infrastructure at scale.

Designed to merge seamlessly with the surrounding coastal environment, the roof garden was established using more than 110,000 indigenous plants, carefully selected to reflect the site’s original ecological character while meeting the technical demands of a major infrastructure asset.

More than a decade on, the project continues to demonstrate how green roofs can contribute to resilient, future-focused developments; delivering environmental performance, visual integration, biodiversity outcomes, and enduring landscape value.
Projects like the Victorian Desalination Plant highlight what’s possible when architects, landscape architects, engineers, and builders collaborate to embed nature into complex built environments.

This project remains a leading example of large-scale nature-based design in Australia. Learn more:
