In Melbourne’s iconic Bourke Street precinct, the acclaimed hospitality venue Maison Bâtard, which opened in November 2024, continues to set a benchmark for urban elegance and sustainable design. With its refined European aesthetic, the venue integrates intelligent greening solutions that enhance both its ambiance and the surrounding streetscape.
Contracted by leading construction firm Kapitol Group, Fytogreen Australia was engaged to deliver a comprehensive greening solution, including the design, supply, installation, and ongoing maintenance of bespoke planter systems. The project features a combination of water reservoir units on the ground floor and Level 2, and fully irrigated and drained aluminium planter boxes on Level 2 and the rooftop. These systems were engineered to meet the spatial and environmental challenges of a multi-level, high-traffic hospitality setting.
The aluminium planter boxes, custom-fabricated and powder-coated to match the architectural palette, were selected for their lightweight durability and fire compliance (AS1530.3). Their sleek design complements the venue’s modern aesthetic while supporting long-term horticultural performance.
Fytogreen collaborated closely with renowned landscape designer Paul Bangay and the architectural team at Mitchell & Eades to ensure the greenery aligned with the venue’s design vision. While the centrepiece tree was supplied by Bangay’s team and installed by Fytogreen, all other planting was executed by Fytogreen based on Bangay’s specifications. Signature plantings such as Acer palmatum and Trachelospermum jasminoides add seasonal interest and texture across the site.
In addition to the planter systems, Fytogreen also supplied and installed a custom trellis wire system to support vertical greening elements, further enhancing the venue’s green identity.
Fytogreen continues to provide horticultural maintenance to ensure the planters remain vibrant and healthy year-round. The intelligent water management systems have proven highly effective in supporting plant resilience and reducing maintenance demands.
The Maison Bâtard project exemplifies the power of thoughtful green infrastructure. Through the use of innovative aluminium planter boxes and expert collaboration, Fytogreen has delivered a sustainable, visually striking solution that elevates both the venue’s ambiance and Melbourne’s urban landscape.
