The University of Technology Sydney (UTS) has taken a bold step in sustainable design with the installation of a vibrant green wall by Fytogreen Australia. Located at the ground floor of UTS Building 15 on Broadway in Ultimo, this vertical garden spans 33.2 square meters and features 625 plants from 40 different species. Completed in March 2023, the project reflects UTS’s dedication to green innovation and environmental research.
Designed by DTB Architects and installed by Fytogreen, the UTS green wall uses the advanced FytoFelt system—a sustainable, non-degrading felt medium that supports healthy plant growth. The wall also includes a dedicated test area for irrigation controllers, allowing UTS to explore smart water management technologies in a real-world setting.
Fytogreen provided full maintenance for the first two years after installation, ensuring the vertical garden remained lush, healthy, and visually striking. This commitment to quality care helped establish the wall as a thriving example of biophilic design on campus.
Beyond its aesthetic appeal, the green wall improves air quality, supports biodiversity, and enhances wellbeing for students, staff, and visitors. It also serves as a live educational tool, showcasing how sustainable architecture can be integrated into urban learning environments.
The UTS green wall is more than just a beautiful feature—it’s a living, research-driven asset that demonstrates the university’s leadership in sustainability and innovation.
