Different Types of Bricks and their Uses

1 Burnt clay

The most common brick in the world is also one of the oldest construction materials. Burnt clay bricks are made by packing clay into moulds, then drying and firing. Although they do not look amazing, they are incredibly versatile and you can use them for pretty much any structure. Even the worst quality burnt clay bricks have their use, since they can be broken down into concrete aggregates.

2 Concrete

As the name suggests, these bricks are made entirely from concrete poured into moulds. These bricks are strong and can be assembled onsite at any size or shape, as long as the moulds are available. They can also be mixed with different pigments to create different colours and their aesthetic value makes them great for facades or outdoor walls.

3. Engineering bricks

The king of bricks; the engineering brick is unmatched in its ability to bear loads and resist water absorption. Firing at extreme temperatures increases the density of the brick so that in some cases it can even be used as a damp proof course. Since these bricks are dearer and less attractive than other bricks, it’s mainly used when structural performance is crucial.

4. Sand Lime Bricks

With a smooth finish, high strength and great acoustic insulation, sand lime bricks are commonly specified in projects. They are strong enough to provide load bearing qualities, while also having great aesthetic qualities. Another advantage is that it doesn’t need too much mortar, offsetting some of the cost of the brick and saving time overall on a project.
