Dunn & Hillam Architects were engaged by Camden Council to design new amenities in Curry Reserve, Camden to replace the existing amenities building. We proposed to break down the typical form of an amenities block by externalising circulation spaces, increasing visual and physical permeability. The small solid elements can be considered as a loose fit, collected under a large common roof. The orientation of the external screened hand washing area allows for expansive views towards the park, and sight lines towards the new wet play area.
The design becomes part of the landscape, breaking down solid edges, and creating an inviting space for the public. A passive and pragmatic approach was implemented to sustainably provide natural light and ventilation to each of the bathrooms, and ensure appropriate orientation on the site. Its central location within Curry Reserve enables easy access to each of the facilities, and its proximity to the existing carpark ensures ease of maintenance and accessibility for non-park users.
