This regional project sees us returning to work on a building designed by our practice in 1955, with significant additions again in 1998. This current project involves the expansion of the existing aged care component of Clermont Multi-Purpose Health Service, from six residents to a total of 22 aged care residents. The decision to close and relocate the residents of an existing aged care facility elsewhere in town was triggered by compliance issues, but remained quite unpopular. Our role in this project was specifically to sensitively manage the consultation phase and to develop the design mindful of the communities concerns.
The design as it was developed was focused on balancing two outcomes, the first was achieving an efficient service model for the aged care wing in collaboration with the nursing staff; the second was to support the dignity of the residents and providing a suitable homely and domestic character, such that it has its own identity separate to that of the hospital.
