St Benedict's College - Library Building

Oran Park, New South Wales

The St Benedict’s Catholic College Library creates an open and collaborative learning space that is used extensively by students and the wider school community. The building creates a variety of spaces to cater for the needs of individual learners, small groups and large groups in an inspiring and dynamic environment.

The St Benedict’s Catholic College Library was constructed as part of the fourth stage of the overall Masterplan for the college. Fulton Trotter Architects collaborated closely with the college, the Catholic Education Office for the Diocese of Wollongong and the wider school community to develop the masterplan and the detailed design of the Library Building.

The building is located in a prominent position at the front of the site – creating a formal entry corridor into the site which connects the main entrance to the Covered Learning Area at the centre of the school campus. The triangular planning of the building is formed by the creation of this entry corridor as well as the connections to the adjacent existing buildings. The building grows from a single storey volume at the front of the school to a two storey volume that creates a connection to the upper floors of the Covered Learning Area and adjacent buildings. This location reinforces the Library as the focal point of learning within the school.

The architecture of the building is informed by the overall composition of the masterplan, which combines two distinct styles of building – the brick and tile building (referencing the suburban housing developments growing around the site) and the block and steel building (referencing the vernacular sheds that were prominent in the area before the current suburban developments began. The building utilises a palette of low maintenance, durable materials in a sensitive and creative way to create an outcome that is both cost-effective and striking.
