THE PROJECT

The State Theatre (former Empire Theatre) opened in 1952 and is Hong Kong’s last surviving large-scale movie palace. Its captivating parabolic exoskeleton truss is a unique design that bears witness to the history of North Point once dubbed “Little Shanghai.”

For this important revitalization works, the preservation of the iconic “Flying Buttress” at Roof is an important part of this heritage preservation project. To ensure this old decade concrete can remain in good condition, the client discussed with Fosroc on proven conservation product solution.

THE SOLUTION

It is well known that for repairing old, contaminated concrete, new spalling concretes would be formed around the repaired areas, an effect known as “Incipient Anode Effect”. This is well documented in the EN 1504 Repair Standard and means that concrete repairs work need to be ongoing and never ends.

For this landmark preservation project, the client would not want to keep on the concrete repairs for every year or so. In such case, Fosroc Galvashield XP anode offers a perfect solution.

THE BENEFITS

The easy-to-use Galvashield XP product in Concrete Repairs, can effectively prevent the formation of new Corrosions around the Repair area, enable a durable long-lasting repairs.

Fosroc Galvashield anodes are comprised of high purity zinc cast with an enhanced alkail mortar which keep the zinc active over the life of the anode. It works on the principle of sacrificial protection. When two dissimilar metals are placed in an electrolyte (concrete), the most active

metal (zinc) will sacrifice itself to protect the less active metal (steel reinforcements) against corrosion. The benefits are :
