Ho Man Tin MTR Station

Hong Kong, HKSAR

Architectural Consultant employed by MTR to carry out the rchitectural preliminary design and detail design for the new MTR station – Ho Man Tin Station.

Located at the former Valley Road Estate site, the Ho Man Tin MTR Station will be the interchange between the Kwun Tong Line Extension (KTE) and Shatin Central Link (SCL). Kwun Tong Line passengers heading towards the New Territories will be able to interchange at this station for the SCL, or proceed to Hong Kong Island by interchanging at Hung Hom Station. This new line will alleviate congestion along the existing Tsuen Wan Line and East Rail Line.

The location of the station entrances are strategically planned to allow integration with the surrounding public infrastructures consisting of pedestrian subway, footbridges and Public Transport Interchange. The station not only provides convenience access for residents in the catchment area, but also provides an enhanced connectivity between the surrounding residential estates to Chatham Road and Hunghom area for non-rail users. The station also integrates with a future property development above. As such, these complex and interweaving

passenger flows have become the major challenge to the architectural planning in this project.

Owing to the alignments of the two rail lines, Ho Man Tin Station will be the first railway station adopting a cruciform design in Hong Kong, where the lower platform will serve KTE and the upper level platform will serve SCL. The two platforms will be linked with an interchange

concourse by lifts and escalators for ease of traffic flow. Resulting with a simple and straight-forward passenger flow in this complex station has become one of successes of this project.

The station is partly buried under the hillside and partly above ground. Urban Integration of the station and its surroundings is the objective of the design. A glass box entrance, as the main entrance level at Chatham Road North will be beautifully integrated with a 4,500 square meter landscaped sitting out area, creating a unique recreational landmark along the railway services. Vertical greening and wall covering plantations will be adopted to increase greening of the area to provide a better community and travelling experience.
