Shanghai Lao Lao is a restaurant that offers contemporary Shanghai cuisine at an affordable price for its customers. Shanghai cuisine, traditionally, does not come cheap and therefore, the task to establish an affordable Shanghai cuisine brand is frankly oxymoronic in nature and therefore challenging.
The design is minimal, where we have only, at times, highlighted the space with dashes of red; this is quintessentially Chinese.
Our design celebrates the making of the cooking process: the highlights of the restaurant are the show-kitchen and the “staged” noodle bar. The diners are part of an interactive interior: noodle making process; the beating sound of the flour, the steaming Xiao Long Bao, etc. These intangible experiences are important parts of the design.
It is also the first time that we have attempted to introduce AR technology into the dinning experience. Apart from serving the client as the designer for the brand, we have also redesigned the logo and its affiliated branding elements such as the utensils and uniform (with the esteemed Hong Kong designer Hinz Pak). We wish that the new image for Shanghai cuisine dining may be manifested on every facets from this interior architecture. It is our believe to ensure that the architectural design and branding to be coherent.
