University building La Maison du Savoir

Esch-sur-Alzette, Luxembourg

The goals

The design for this building goes back to an international competition won by Baumschlager Eberle Architekten in cooperation with Christian Bauer & Associés. The goal: a new starting point for the campus of the University of Luxembourg. Nothing less than the heart of the new »Cité des sciences«.

The implementation

A sign for the future and a reminiscence of the history of the location: the Maison du Savoir was conceived by Baumschlager Eberle Architekten as the center of the new campus of the University of Luxembourg and realized in cooperation with Christian Bauer & Associés as a landmark that can be seen from afar. A university building was erected on the site of the former steel industry in the Belval district of Esch-sur-Alzette. As a landmark, it symbolizes the transformation of the former site for steel production into a modern educational location.

The characteristics

In many ways, the Maison du Savoir seeks to bridge the gap to the time when steel was still being produced on the 27.3 hectare “Terrasse des Hauts-Fourneaux” site. With its 18 floors and a total height of 85 meters, the tower construction is based on the dimensions of the former blast furnaces.

Floating center.

Prestressed concrete constructions, which cantilever from the second floor, provide the subjective feeling of floating. In terms of urban planning, the "Place du Saint-Esprit" in the north is connected to the open spaces for the library and institute buildings in the south. The Maison du Savoir thus creates an urban context without giving up its solitary position and sculptural character.

A double-shell construction was chosen for the facade. The inner layer forms the climatic limit of the house, the outer layer envelops the building as a steel honeycomb, whereby the degree of transparency and thus the lighting can be regulated. The Maison du Savoir has a high level of user comfort that does not require mechanical ventilation or cooling. Only the large lecture halls have appropriate ventilation systems. Inside, a program was developed that allows for a variety of uses. Several lecture and conference halls, professors' offices, administration rooms and restaurants are housed on its 50,000 m². The classrooms and professors' rooms are arranged in such a way that a network of paths, bridges and squares is created that corresponds to the outside space.
