The Vanke East Canal No.1 Commercial District was completed in 2006 with the aim of providing a new and accessible commercial area for local residents.
Gravity was tasked with reviving the former dilapidated industrial site on the edge of Dongguan’s main canal into a bustling shopping district. Following a unique interpretation of the original brief, we created a space that both rejuvenated and redefined the site’s original character.
The district’s existing design language inspired the revival of existing buildings as well as the creation of new constructions. An aqueduct structure from a preserved vegetable factory was converted into a bar and many of the original chimneys scattered throughout the site remained in place.
In keeping with the energetic character of the industrial site in its prime, a sense of perceived chaos was integrated into the design. The naturally
uneven terrain and the skewed alternating angles of the buildings reimagined the outwardly hectic nature of the old factories.
Facing onto the canal, this site recalls its initial industrial design language, forming a vibrant public space that is both familiar and unique to Dongguan.
