About Core Design Gallery
Core Design Workshop is multi-disciplinary design practice based in Subang Jaya, Malaysia. The design studio was founded by design architect Chun Hooi TAN in year 2009. Chun Hooi holds a MSc in Computer Aided Building Design and BSc in Architecture from University of Strathclyde in Glasgow and Queen’s University of Belfast, UK with field of expertise in architectural and spatial design, a field which focuses on the relationship between architecture, design and mankind, with creativity as a point of departure. An expert on spatial design, he has explored deeply into spatial organisation and all its human implications. He holds strongly that the more rapidly organisations, patterns of living and local traditions are disrupted, the more awareness is needed. It is crucial to know how people actually live and to understand the societal agendas and the historical background behind the change of spaces, and it is fundamental to see the interior organisation and design in relation to the architecture, the city, the landscape, and society at large. Chun Hooi investigated the mutual relations between physical and social spaces, including Spatial Organisation, Interior Design and Microarchitecture. His design works are always on a human scale that relate to subjects of relevance to society and its social, cultural and environmental issues. Upon obtaining his Degrees in Architecture from UK, in year 1999, Chun Hooi returned to embark on his architectural design journey by working in various local and international design firms in the country. He has always been fascinated with designing in the local context to the built environment. He has passionately spent the past 20 years designing and implementing various projects in order to perfect the designing practice of his contemporary architecture. His versatility includes big scale commercial buildings to niche boutique housing developments, exclusive private residences, retail mall refurbishments, corporate offices and interiors of retail outlets. In 2009, Chun Hooi founded Core Design Workshop Sdn Bhd, a design studio where he and his team of young designers actively pursuing on the philosophy of design he has been holding. In 2010 he co-founded Core Design Gallery with art curator Scarlette LEE, now a prominent Malaysia contemporary art galley in the country. With that he started a vision to bring the 3 elements of contemporary living, architecture – design – art in coherence to creatively sculpt habitable space where the essence of true spatial experience is discovered.
