Masjid Negara Project Featured In ACCU Nara International Correspondent's 21th Regular Report

07 Feb 2020 by Mapei

Masjid Negara, Malaysia’s National Mosque, is the nationwide symbol of Islam. Comprising a main prayer hall with 48 smaller domes around it, it is set to the northwest of the old railway station, a couple of hundred metres towards the end of Jalan Sultan Hishamuddin. Spread across 13 acres, the Masjid Negara is able to accommodate up to 15,000 worshipers.

The design took inspiration from mosques in India, Pakistan, the Middle East, and Spain. It features a 73-m high minaret, and a 16-point concrete dome which resembles an open umbrella. Today, the Masjid Negara stands as a historic monument among Kuala Lumpur’s modern towers and skyscrapers and has been classified as a Class 1 heritage building.

Major repair & rehabilitation works were approved in the Masjid Negara’s Golden Jubilee anniversary year in 2015. MAPEI solutions were selected for the re-waterproofing and re-tiling works on the pyramids and domes. This project is described in detail in the ACCU (Asia-Pacific Cultural Centre for UNESCO) Nara International Correspondent’s 21st Regular Report. The ACCU correspondents periodically send reports on cultural heritage protection activities in which they have been recently involved, and Masjid Negara is the selected project for their 21th Report.
