The proposed Sime Darby Autonexus represents a major milestone in the history of Sime Darby Motors and will be further proof of their commitment to excellence in customer service. Over the years, Sime Darby Motors has built up an enviable stable of thoroughbred automotive marques.
Our brief was to design a building that would unite these diverse marques in a single complex whilst maintaining their unique individuality. With a gross built up area of almost 2 million sqft Sime Darby Autonexus is a complex of its kind in Malaysia and will help to consolidate Sime Darby Motor’s position as one of the major automotive players in the Asia Pacific Region.
The key design challenge with Sime Darby Autonexus was to create timeless spaces in which the cars themselves are given the opportunity to shine. This challenge was magnified by the fact that the cars that will be displayed ten or twenty years from now will look radically different from the ‘state of the art’ models of today. The showrooms however will have to remain contemporary and continue to function as blank canvases, upon which tomorrow’s engineers and designers can display their works of art.
Ever mindful of the need to maintain marque individuality, our design was conceived as a series of standalone buildings interconnected by high level bridges and crowned by a rooftop parking structure. BMW and Volvo were identified as anchor tenants on either side of a mall containing other brands Porsche, Jaguar Land Rover, Ford and Hyundai.
The final components of Sime Darby Autonexus are two Office Towers. These are strategically located at both sides of the development and have a total net area of around 300,000sqft. These towers lie virtually hidden behind the BMW showroom on one side and the Volvo showroom on the other side. However, from Level 7 to Level 11 they explode upwards and across the adjacent buildings to create a dramatic crown to the overall complex.
