Originally known as Scott's Hill, then re-christened as Gemmil's Hill, Ann Siang Hill finally settled on it's current name by it's owner Chia Ann Siang, a Malayan-born Chinese sawmiller. Early Chinese immigrants visited Ann Siang Hill when they wanted to send money home to their families in China, as it was the traditional area of remittance houses. Letter writers and calligraphers also had their businesses along the shophouses of Ann Siang Hill to help the illiterate immigrants write letters home.
