As the climate crisis intensifies, architects are being called to lead with clarity, responsibility, and measurable action. AIA members reaffirmed this role in 2019 by unanimously adopting a Resolution for Urgent and Sustained Climate Action, committing the profession to accelerate decarbonization across buildings and the built environment.

At the heart of this commitment is the AIA Framework for Design Excellence, which organizes climate‑ and people‑focused practice into ten principles: Integration, Equitable Communities, Ecosystems, Water, Economy, Energy, Well‑Being, Resources, Change, and Discovery. Together, they provide a holistic lens for delivering zero‑carbon, resilient, equitable, and healthy design outcomes.

Supporting this, the AIA 2030 Commitment helps firms track and reduce operational energy, the Materials Pledge advances healthier, lower‑impact material choices, and AIA’s resilience initiatives equip architects to deliver safer, more adaptive, and more socially equitable places.

Ultimately, every project—regardless of scale—is an opportunity to advance environmental stewardship and social good. Through intentional design and collective action, the profession can help shape a future in which buildings uplift communities, restore ecological balance, and meaningfully address the climate crisis
