In the heritage listed, inner city neighbourhood of Carlton, the Client’s terrace site of 175 sqm, afforded an opportunity to develop the rear yard into a 3 storey townhouse whilst also restoring the existing 2-storey heritage listed terrace house into a modern dwelling.
Within a overall footprint of 9 x 7m, the design took the entire ground floor as carparking for both dwellings along with guest facilities behind. The living, dining and kitchen were then placed on the upper 1st storey, opening to a courtyard accessing north sunlight. Two bedrooms were then provided on the 2nd storey. By utilising large windows to both ends of the terrace,
the limited depth was countered by having vistas through the building to beyond, creating a greater sense of space.
The form addressed setback and overlooking concerns by creating a simple curved roof that extended all the way to the 1st storey floor, morphing into the main living room wall. Clad in corrugated zincalume, in keeping with the local material palette, this large form both defined the site and complimented the pitched roofs of the Victorian terraces.
