TYLin provided civil and structural engineering services for the alternative open plan design for the Changi International Airport, Terminal 3 development in Singapore.
To maximize the use of abundant natural light, TYLin optimized the structural design of the 64,500-square-metre roof structure above the departure hall. The main roof structure for Terminal 3 incorporates 916 skylight openings, each measuring 12.5 square metres.
Changi International Airport, Terminal 3 has seven levels, four above ground and three below ground. The total gross floor area is 427,184 square metres, with a total of 28 aerobridges and supporting infrastructure, eight of which were designed to handle super-jumbo aircraft.
Project Highlights
The amount of direct sunlight is regulated using louvers suspended above and below the skylights.
The open plan design of Terminal 3 gives travelers the convenience of navigating the terminal with minimal dependence on signage.
