Kampong in the Garden

Serangoon

The design continues the Serangoon Kampong concept, creating a Kampong in the garden, fostering social interaction (the Kampong spirit identity) in a relaxed and casual environment.

The existing site consists of 2 different precincts, Zone E and Zone F, from Block 308 to 317 and Block 321 to 329 respectively totaling 19 blocks with 1424 number of dwelling units. The blocks consist of threeroom units (7.9%), four-room units (59.8%), five-room units (14.7%)and executive units (17.5%). Zone F is situated to the south of Lorong Chuan Road, sandwiched by Nanyang Junior College (NYJC) in the south. Zone E is delineated by Serangoon Ave 2 in the north, Serangoon Ave 3 in the east and NYJC in the west. A canal runs at the border of Zone F in the east and south.

The site poses a few challenges:

1. Enhance the Kampong spirit and creating a unique identity

2. Catering to three different age groups, the elderly, the youthful and the children.

3. Connecting the 2 sites to form a contiguous whole.

4. Inserting new drop-off shelters for passengers, without reducing the number of car parking lots

The opportunities are:

1. The estate is matured

2. There are plenty of fully grown trees which provides ample shades and allows the creation of social interaction enclaves.

3. Pedestrian circulation are easily traced, thereby allowing insertion of pathways and linkways.

4. Residents are casual and participatory which facilitate our understanding of the site.

The Design aims to enhance the living environment through the following means:

1. A lush and green garden along Lorong Chuan Road welcomes the residents, together with the Residents’ Corners and new void deck furniture provide places for respite and social interaction.

2. Connecting the site with a new covered linkway from the Lorong Chuan MRT through Block 317, and onwards to all the block, so that during the raining days the residents would not be caught in the rain on their commute to and from the MRT 3.

3. In Zone F, a continuous green strip caters to three different age groups’ physical needs, Senior Fitness area for the elderly, the Adult Fitness area for the youthful and the Playground area for the children. While in Zone E, they are inserted between blocks.

4. Contiguous linkways link all the blocks together, facilitating pedestrians circulation and sheltering them from rain and excessive sunlight. Older open linkways are roofed over to improve weather protection.

5. Entrance gateways are enhanced to create a unique identity.

6. Nodal Shelters are inserted to allow elderly residents to pause and rest while moving around the neighbourhood.

7. A jogging circuit was developed to allow casual joggers to keep healthy.

8. Improve elderly and handicapped circulation through implementation of Universal Design.
