Singapore Sports Hub

singapore

AECOM is creating a parkland setting for the 35-hectare (86 acre) waterfront site that will encompass Singapore’s new national stadium, an Olympic standard aquatic center.

As Asia’s first integrated sports, leisure, entertainment and lifestyle destination, Singapore Sports Hub is a key project in the Singapore’s ‘Sports Singapore Vision 2030’ promoting a more sustainable, healthy and active society at all levels of participation, nationwide. It sets a new standard for large scale sporting developments; positioning sports as a catalyst for urban redevelopment – creating inclusive public destinations which are adaptable and socially integrated to the city’s urban community.

As part of the design team responsible for Singapore Sports Hub AECOM provided masterplanning and landscape architecture for the 35-hectare waterfront site which encompasses a new national stadium with a movable roof, an Olympic-standard aquatic center, a multi-purpose sports hall, sports library and museum, as well as retail, restaurants and entertainment space. Bridging and connecting the community, sports and leisure, an active landscaped ‘social plinth’, organised over three connected levels, injects life and vibrancy between the various facilities and event plazas across the precinct making it a 24/7 destination.

Making the most of the Hub’s strategic location, the walkable precinct area which includes a ‘sports promenade’ – a space for everyday use, providing a fully accessible exercise area and connecting various public spaces – links directly to local pedestrian and cycle networks and to Singapore’s island-wide park connector system; to the Gardens by the Bay, the wider waterfront and surrounding residential areas. There is also easy access to the Mass Rapid Transport (MRT) system and other transportation.

The whole precinct is unified by a consistent philosophy and design approach to landscape, shade, shelter and lighting appropriate to Singapore’s tropical climate. And key to the masterplan is the orientation of key public spaces, establishing views back to the centre of Singapore and to the city’s famous skyline. The natural setting is inherently sustainable with green spaces, passive cooling measures, renewable energy sources and, in a city where potable water is scarce, rainwater harvesting and a bioswale feature which recycles and reuses water for onsite use. In recognition of these achievements the Sports Hub was awarded a BCA Gold Mark.

“We are very proud of what we have designed and of our collaborative effort to build a remarkable project, The Sports Hub is an extremely important project that will deliver world-class sporting and integrated community facilities to the people of Singapore.”
