University of Reading Malaysia

Johor Bahru

As the first overseas campus in Asia for the University, we were challenged to capture and translate the essence of the University’s UK campus. Incorporating spaces for a mixed economy of general teaching, office and specialist teaching including pharmacy and chemistry labs, for 2,000 students and 400 staff in the departments of Law, Business, Built Environment, Chemistry and Pharmacy.

Based upon a simple forum approach, our design places accommodation around a covered heart-space which blurs the traditional boundaries between the buildings and landscape, student and staff areas, formal and informal, learning and social spaces. A translucent roof protects the heart space from direct sunlight and rain, forming a lush green environment for people to work, learn, live and socialise.

Diagonal ramps cross and define the forum and suspended bridges above echo these ramps and connect the parallel teaching wings. Our environmentally responsive design was realised through an exemplary brief and design process led from the UK with construction stage monitoring services provided from our Singapore studio.
