AtkinsRéalis awarded investigation, design and multidisciplinary services contract for the Hong Kong section of Hong Kong-Shenzhen Western Rail Link (Hung Shui Kiu–Qianhai)

First introduced as one of the key railway projects in the 2021 Policy Address and the Northern Metropolis Development Strategy, the Hong Kong-Shenzhen Western Rail Link is a strategic initiative aimed at enhancing Hong Kong’s cross boundary transportation network and improving the efficient flow of people between Hung Shui Kiu in Hong Kong and Qianhai in Shenzhen. Supporting regional connectivity through advanced railway solutions, the project will also contribute to the integrated development of Hong Kong and other cities within the Greater Bay Area (GBA).
AtkinsRéalis will lead the joint venture and provide integrated design and multidisciplinary services to support this transformative cross-boundary infrastructure project. The scope of work includes the construction of the proposed Hung Shui Kiu Station and a 7.3-kilometre railway line extending northwards to the Hong Kong boundary, with two intermediate stations at Ha Tsuen and Lau Fau Shan. The project also involves the development of the Ha Tsuen Depot on a 19-hectare site, enabling works for potential topside developments, and provisions for future rail connections to the planned Hong Kong Island West–Hung Shui Kiu Rail Link.
Seamless cross-border connectivity requires sophisticated system integration. Drawing on its deep expertise in managing complex, multi-standard rail environments, AtkinsRéalis is uniquely positioned to support the planning and coordination of interoperable railway systems. In leading the Hong Kong section, AtkinsRéalis brings valuable cross-boundary insights that will help ensure consistency, compatibility and long-term efficiency across the entire line – aligning with the Hong Kong Government’s strategy to enhance regional connectivity across the GBA.
“We are excited to contribute to this landmark initiative advancing Hong Kong’s vision for transport innovation and cross-border integration. This project not only strengthens regional connectivity, but also sets the foundation for flexible, smart, and integrated railway systems that can guide future developments between Hong Kong and other GBA cities. We are proud to be shaping the next generation of cross-border rail solutions,” said Kelvin Cheng, Managing Director, Transportation & Water, Asia, AtkinsRéalis.
