Petronas Leadership Centre: Where Innovation Meets Serenity
Petronas Leadership Centre is 3-storey building located in tranquil area of Bangi, Selangor. The project consists of Leadership Innovation Space Building (LIS), Senior Leadership Space Building (SLS), Administration office, common recreation facilities, residential suites and man-made lake. The building has a built area of 335,670 square feet, distributed among three levels and a basement, all of which is situated on a 1,524,600 square foot site.

COLLABORATION

The training campus is designed to foster collaboration and support different learning and collaboration styles for improved efficiency. The space is well-lit, comfortable, and provides a range of areas to accommodate different needs. From large open spaces to smaller alcoves suited for various group discussions.

Breakout rooms, lounge areas, and discussion pods provide opportunities for informal interaction. The landscape design not only improves air quality, but also reduces stress and promotes health and well-being, creating a collaborative atmosphere.

FLEXIBILITY

Designing for flexibility is inherent throughout the training campus at various levels, including the micro level of furniture selection, classroom module design, and to the macro level of master plan layout.

The arrangement of the building components was configured to avoid the campus looking and feeling inactive at low peak times. The goal was to create a sense of activity and engagement throughout the whole campus, by designing attractive and functional outdoor spaces, providing multi-use facilities that are flexible and can be adapted for a variety of activities and events

INNOVATIVE

The 360 is a circular, flat-bottomed, multi-purpose hall located at the heart of the training campus. It is designed with 30 pivotal LED screen panels covering three-quarters of the perimeter walls. Not only is the 360 considered the first of its kind in the world, but it has also been patented due to its innovative design. With its state-of-the-art technology, the 360 creates a fully integrated environment providing users with an unprecedented immersive learning experience.

The circular form of the hall is inspired from the “Oil Barrel” that signify the origin of PETRONAS existence whilst function charts future direction of the company.

The LED screen panels rotate around their central axis, creating a captivating and interactive visual experience. Each panel is designed in three distinct pre- sets, as shown in the diagram. The purpose of the panels is to establish a visual connection to the landscape beyond. Thus, they can be adjusted to fit different setting and ambiance for its users.

PASSIVE CLIMATE MODIFIER

In line with PETRONAS’ commitment towards energy efficiency and sustainability, the building is carefully designed to minimize energy consumption by decreasing the need for artificial lighting and cooling. This objective is achieved by having a high-performance building envelope. There are fewer glazings on the Eastern and Western facing walls compared to the Northern and Southern facing walls to reduce exposure of the interior spaces to solar radiation. Furthermore, the horizontal fins are used on the Eastern and Western facing walls, and vertical fins are used on the Northern and Southern facing walls in response to the sun path. The U-values for the walls, the green roofs and the low-e double glazing are 0.50 W/m²K, 0.25 W/m²K and 1.2 W/m²K, respectively.

Aside from achieving low energy consumption, the objective for adapting passive climate modifier strategies is also to create healthy, good quality and comfortable spaces for the users.

LOW ENERGY, WASTE, WATER

A reminisce of the traditional life in the countryside, the building is designed to stay grounded and connected with the surrounding lush landscape.

Not only is the design a subtle homage to the traditional kampung environment, but it also adopts the traditional kampung house’s architectural strategies to respond to the climate effectively.

BLURRING THE BOUNDARIES

Taking advantage of the tropical climate, the building is designed to have seamless connections and better relationships between spaces within the building itself, as well as between the interior spaces and the outdoor landscape.

Not only does this strategy allow for greater energy efficiency through natural lighting and ventilation, but it also provides more versatility regarding the building's purpose and usage.

INTERIOR

The idea of breaking away from traditional campus planning is evident where the boundaries between inside and outside spaces become less distinct, resulting in a more cohesive relationship between interior spaces and nature.

Earthy tones dominate the interior, creating a warm atmosphere as well as strengthening the sense of connection to nature that the spaces open out to.

BALANCE AND WELL BEING

The objectives of the space planning is not just merely to serve the logical physical needs of the programs, but also to achieve a positive environment for the mental wellbeing of the staff and visitors.

Informal spaces are integrated in the space planning to provide breaks and to encourage informal activities and human interactions that are beneficial to the health and mental well-being.

The spaces are design to be naturally well-lit and visually connected to the surrounding nature to avoid sense of isolation and disconnection with the sense of time.
